NICKEL PLATE RAILROAD BRIDGE | $95
CLEVELAND: THE CITY OF BRIDGES. The construction of railroads in the 1850's were crucial to the growth of Cleveland, bringing industry & prosperity to the young city in the 1870’s and 1880’s. The iron horse demanded more bridges to cross the valleys & the rivers of northeast Ohio to link Cleveland with the rest of the nation. A double-track iron bride, 68 feet above the valley, the Nickel Plate Railroad Bridge was completed in May of 1882; but it took most of the summer to erect the iron towers and girder spans.
The viaduct over the Cuyahoga was remodeled in 1904 & 1944. Here the bridge is tinted a light shade of purple, standing out from the city behind & the river below.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Throughout its rich history as a bustling rust belt city, the need for bridges to cross the Cuyahoga River in order to connect with the rest of the nation resulted in over 330 bridges in the immediate Cleveland area. Original photography & graphic art collide with the collection Bridges, featuring five of the most important & aesthetically interesting bridges that remain in operation today; including swing, lift, railroad, & truss bridges. Each piece highlights one of these landmark bridges, amped up in color & contrasted against its surroundings, which are simplified to neutral black & white sketches. Printed on canvas & stretched over a wood frame, this collection eliminates the need for traditional framing because the image wraps completely around all edges (but they come in the frame-friendly size of 11"x14" just in case).
